2 tsp sugar
1 cup warm water
2 tsp yeast
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp pizza spice OR ½ tsp salt
1/3 cup pizza or pasta sauce
Grated cheddar or mozzarella cheese – about 1/2 cup shredded
1. Preheat oven to 400F.
2. Grease cookie sheet with a thin layer of margarine, or line with parchment paper.
3. Dissolve sugar in warm water in a medium mixing bowl.
4. Stir in yeast. Let stand 5 min.
5. Add 1 cup flour. Mix well with a wooden spoon.
6. Add remaining flour. Mix well. Eventually you will have to use your hands. Add extra flour a tbsp. at a time if dough is too sticky to handle.
7. Knead on floured counter for 10 min.
8. Divide dough into 4-6 pieces and roll each into a rope about 30cm (1 ruler length).
9. Shape into pretzel form. (allow to rise 20 min. or until doubled in size, if you don't have time you can skip this but they'll be more dense)
10. Brush pizza sauce over the pretzel with a pastry brush.
11. Sprinkle with grated cheese.
12. Place on cookie sheet.
13. Bake 15min. or until browned and baked through.
